I've been making cartoons for decades. I've messed around with 3D here and there since college, but now I'm finally delving deep into creating characters with Blender. I used to be SO against 3D, primarily because I had seen "Earthworm Jim" and was really hoping hand-drawn animation was where video games were going (and hopefully not in the beautiful but awkwardly controlled "Dragon's Lair" or "Space Ace" direction), when I started seeing games like the original "Tomb Raider" becoming popular (1994-1996). The 3D characters were so blocky and angular, and animated in a stiff, mechanical fashion. It was depressing.
Years later, 3D has redeemed itself. It's now possible to model and animate characters that look and feel just as dynamic and alive as 2D animated characters. And I don't really think "cell-shading" improves anything -- to me, it just points out the differences between the two. Instead, I now appreciate the qualities 3D brings on its own.
I'm excited to see what I can create in this new medium!
